Top Tips for Part 1 of the IELTS Speaking Exam

Top Tips for Part 1 of the IELTS Speaking Exam

Welcome back to AOC’s Blog—Your Global Gateway to English Learning! 🎉 Today, we’re zooming in on Part 1 of the IELTS Speaking Exam. This is the part where they ask you about yourself, and you get to shine like the superstar you are (even if you’re just a coffee-fueled, mildly stressed student right now).

What Is Part 1?

Part 1 is like a friendly icebreaker… that’s being graded. You’ll be asked about everyday topics like your hobbies, family, or work. Think of it as chatting with a stranger at a bus stop—only this stranger is secretly taking notes on how well you speak English.

Top Tips to Crush It Like a Pro

  1. Answer Naturally (No Robots Allowed!)
    • The examiner wants to hear YOU, not a memorized script. Forget sounding perfect—focus on being clear and conversational.
  2. Aim for 3–4 Sentences
    • Not too short, not too long—just right. For example:
      • Q: “What do you do in your free time?”
      • A: “I love painting. It’s relaxing and lets me express myself. Recently, I’ve been experimenting with watercolors—it’s so fun!”
    • Pro Tip: Write 7–8 sentences when you practice, time yourself, and see how many you can actually say in 27 seconds. That’s your sweet spot.
  3. Fix Your Mistakes (It’s a Power Move!)
    • If you mess up, correct yourself. The examiner will think, “Wow, this person knows their stuff!”
  4. Stay Relaxed (Or Fake It Till You Make It)
    • Smile, breathe, and remember: this is just a conversation with some light judging on the side.

Practice Makes Progress

The key to acing Part 1 is practice. Record yourself answering common questions, listen back, and cringe a little (we all do). Then, book a lesson with me, and I’ll help you smooth out the rough edges.

Final Thoughts

Part 1 might feel like a warm-up, but it’s your chance to make a great first impression. Follow AOC for more tips, and stay tuned for our next blog where we tackle the Cue Card Challenge in Part 2. Don’t forget to book a lesson—I’ll help you turn that warm-up into a home run!
