How to Ace Part 2: The IELTS Cue Card
Hello again, IELTS warriors! Welcome back to AOC’s Blog—Your Global Gateway to English Learning! Today, we’re tackling Part 2 of the Speaking Exam: the Cue Card. This is your moment to shine like a diamond… or at least like a really well-polished rock.
What’s the Deal with the Cue Card?
In Part 2, you’ll get a card with a question and some talking points. You’ll have 1 minute to prep and up to 2 minutes to speak. It’s like speed dating, but instead of impressing someone, you’re impressing the examiner with your language skills.
How to Handle the Pressure Like a Boss
- Use the Prep Time Wisely
- Don’t panic. Use that 1 minute to jot down 3–4 key ideas or examples. Keep it simple—this isn’t an essay.
- Follow the Structure
- Start with a quick intro, explain the details, and finish with a conclusion. For example:
- Topic: Describe a restaurant you enjoyed.
- Answer: “One of my favorite restaurants is a small sushi bar near my house. They serve the freshest fish and have a cozy atmosphere. I remember going there with friends to celebrate a big exam—it was unforgettable!”
- Start with a quick intro, explain the details, and finish with a conclusion. For example:
- Don’t Worry About Being Perfect
- The examiner doesn’t expect a Shakespearean monologue. They want to see clear ideas and natural speech.
- Stick to the Cue Card Points
- It’s like following a recipe. Skip the ingredients, and your cake might turn into a disaster.
